Crystal Chandeliers and other Famous Light Designs

Lights have always been used as a source of illumination, from the basic candles and fire-lit torches of medieval times through to the sophisticated electric light fixtures of today. In modern times, these practical aspects of illumination have been added to by the aesthetic considerations of form and design. While numerous types of light fixtures have been designed and made throughout the centuries, only a few have managed to be considered classics. Probably the most famous light fixture of them all is the chandelier, which while available in numerous variations is always recognisable for what it is. Other famous and easily recognised light fixtures and technologies include spot lights, soffits, alcove lighting, fluorescent lights, and various styles of lamps.

If the chandelier is the most famous style of light in the world, then the most famous type of chandelier is the crystal chandelier. crystal chandeliers (Kristalllüster) incorporate specialised crystal glass into their design, which is often hung from a ring or crown like form in festoons or on chains. A festoon is a wreath or garland that is used in architecture and design, and incorporated with glass beads and ornamentation in crystal chandelier constructions. Some of the most famous chandeliers in the world include the chandelier in the Dolmabache Palace, the Art Nouveau style chandelier in Municipal House in Prague, the French Empire Style chandelier in the White House in the United States, and the contemporary rock crystal chandelier that is hung in the Walker Art Center in Minnesota.

Apart from famous individual chandeliers, there are also a number of famous yet more general light fixtures. For example, the humble French Candle Chandelier is a design that all people around the world would recognise, as are many of the lamp designs that have become almost archetypal in the west. Common light designs in modern homes include track lights, ceiling lamps, recessed lights, outdoor landscape lighting, soffits, and sconces. As light fixtures continue to play an important role in 21st century interior design, people will keep making beautiful objects with light, along with the materials and technology that surrounds it.
